A dead generator is a parts warehouse.

Even a generator with a blown engine is worth real money: the alternator is copper and steel, the radiator is aluminum and copper, the enclosure is steel, the wiring is copper, and the engine itself has core value to rebuilders. Scrapping a whole genset without parting the valuable pieces is leaving money in the yard. This is the end-of-life playbook.

THE BREAKDOWN

What is inside a dead genset

Alternator (the prize)

The generator end is 30–40% of the unit’s weight in steel and copper windings — the single most valuable component. A good alternator from a blown-engine set has resale value to rebuilders; a bad one is still premium copper-bearing scrap. Never scrap the alternator without pricing it separately.

Radiator & cooling

Aluminum and copper/brass cores — clean radiator scrap with established markets. Drain fluids first; mixed-fluid radiators get docked.

Engine core

A rebuildable engine block has core value — rebuilders pay for the casting. Cummins and CAT cores command the strongest core prices because the rebuild market is deepest. A cracked block is cast-iron scrap; an intact one is inventory to someone.

Enclosure & skid

Structural steel — shred or prepared steel pricing. Weather enclosures in good shape have resale as-is (someone always needs a housing).

Controls & wiring

Copper wiring, breakers, the control panel — controllers (Deep Sea, Basler, Woodward) have a used market when functional. Pull and test before scrapping.

Fuel system

Day tanks are steel (clean them — fuel residue kills the price); fuel itself can be polished and resold or burned. Never cut a tank that held fuel without proper cleaning and inerting.

THE PLAYBOOK

Part, then scrap — in that order

The money ranking for a dead genset: 1. Sell whole to a rebuilder or parts buyer (best — one transaction). 2. Pull the high-value components (alternator, controller, radiator) for separate sale, scrap the rest. 3. Scrap whole as-is (fastest, least money). The most expensive mistake is #3 when #1 was available — which is why you get the whole-unit price before you touch a wrench. Fluids drained, batteries out, and components sorted by metal type: that is the difference between a yard’s shrug price and a real number.

FLUIDS & HAZMAT

The unglamorous part: fluids, batteries, and hazmat

Before any parting or scrapping: drain all fluids — engine oil, coolant, diesel fuel. Mixed fluids get docked or rejected at the yard; separated fluids have their own (modest) markets. Batteries out — lead-acid batteries are a separate commodity with core charges; never let them ride into the shred pile unpriced. Fuel tanks need proper cleaning before cutting — diesel vapor in a confined tank is an explosion hazard, and yards will reject uncleaned tanks. Asbestos appears in very old exhaust insulation — test before disturbing. Do the hazmat homework once and it becomes routine; skip it and the fines exceed the scrap value.

Is a non-running generator worth anything?

Yes — alternator (copper/steel), radiator (aluminum/copper), engine core value, enclosure steel, copper wiring, and controls. Price it whole before parting.

What is engine core value?

Rebuilders pay for intact engine castings — Cummins and CAT cores command the strongest prices. A cracked block is just cast iron.

Should I part it out or scrap it whole?

Whole-unit sale first, then part the high-value pieces, then scrap — in that order. Scrapping whole without pricing the unit is the expensive mistake.

What about the fuel and fluids?

Drain everything. Fuel can be polished/resold; contaminated fluids go to proper disposal. Yards dock for mixed fluids.

Do used generator controllers have value?

Yes — Deep Sea, Basler, and Woodward controllers have an active used market when functional. Test before scrapping.
