What is the difference between plenum and riser cable?
Plenum (CMP) is rated for air-handling spaces — low-smoke, strictest fire rating. Riser (CMR) is for vertical between-floor runs and general in-wall use. Plenum can substitute for riser; never the reverse.
Do I need plenum cable in my house?
Usually no — residential work typically uses CMR or CMX unless local code or a specific air-handling space requires CMP. Check with your AHJ.
Why is plenum cable more expensive?
The jacket materials (FEP/low-smoke compounds) cost more and the testing is stricter — typically 30–50% over riser.
Can I use riser cable in a drop ceiling?
Only if it is not a plenum (air-handling) ceiling. If HVAC air circulates through the space, code requires CMP. When in doubt, ask the inspector before you pull.
Is plenum cable worth more used?
Yes — CMP is the premium jacket tier in both resale and recovery. Photograph the jacket rating.
