For plenum spaces: the air-handling areas above drop ceilings and below raised floors where HVAC air circulates. Jacket (usually FEP/Teflon or low-smoke PVC) resists burning and produces minimal toxic smoke — because in a fire, the plenum would distribute smoke everywhere. The strictest rating, the most expensive cable.
For vertical runs between floors (risers) and general in-wall use. Self-extinguishing and fire-resistant, but not low-smoke rated for air-handling spaces. The standard for most commercial in-wall installation — and the most common jacket in the secondary market.

Code’s hierarchy: you can always substitute upward — plenum (CMP) cable is legal anywhere riser or general-purpose is allowed. You can never substitute downward: riser cable in a plenum space fails inspection, full stop. The economics: plenum cable costs roughly 30–50% more than riser. Smart contractors buy plenum only for plenum spaces and riser everywhere else — but when the AHJ is strict or the drawings are ambiguous, many just run plenum throughout and skip the argument. For sellers: CMP jacket print is a premium marker — photograph it and price it as what it is.
The fire rating is printed on every legitimate cable jacket: “CMP”, “CMR”, “CM” — alongside the category, AWG, and UL/ETL listing. No rating printed? Treat it as the lowest tier and do not install it in rated spaces. For pull-out being sold: the rating on the jacket is a value tier — CMP pull-out outvalues CMR, which outvalues unmarked. Photograph the jacket print clearly; it is the listing.
Outside North America, the standard is LSZH (low-smoke zero-halogen) — sometimes marked LSOH. Like CMP it limits toxic smoke, but it also eliminates halogen gases (burning PVC releases hydrochloric acid — corrosive to lungs and electronics). LSZH is common in European and Asian installs and increasingly specified in US data centers and transit. It is not a NEC substitute for CMP — the ratings test different things — but in the secondary market, LSZH cable from international jobs trades alongside plenum as premium jacket stock. Read the jacket: “LSZH” or “LSOH” printed alongside the category means low-smoke zero-halogen construction.
Plenum (CMP) is rated for air-handling spaces — low-smoke, strictest fire rating. Riser (CMR) is for vertical between-floor runs and general in-wall use. Plenum can substitute for riser; never the reverse.
