Shielding: protection you have to install correctly.

Most Ethernet cable is unshielded (UTP) — and that is fine, because twisted pairs reject interference on their own. Shielded cable adds foil or braid around pairs or the whole cable for electrically noisy environments. But shielding only works when it is bonded to the building’s telecommunications grounding system at both ends — a floating shield is an antenna that makes things worse. (Runs between buildings with separate grounds are the exception: bond one end only.) This guide covers when shielding earns its keep and the grounding rule that decides everything.

THE CODE

Reading shielding designations

The ISO naming code reads as [overall]/[pair]TP: U/UTP (unshielded — the standard), F/UTP (foil overall, unshielded pairs — the common shielded type), S/FTP (braid overall, foil per pair — Cat7 style), F/FTP, SF/UTP. The letters: U = unshielded, F = foil, S = braid. Jacket print carries this code — “F/UTP” on the jacket means shielded cable, priced accordingly.

When shielding wins

Factories with VFDs and welders, hospitals with imaging equipment, airports and broadcast facilities, outdoor runs near power lines, and any 10-gigabit installation where alien crosstalk matters (much of Cat6a is shielded for this reason). If the environment is electrically loud, shield.

When it is wasted

Typical offices, schools, homes — UTP’s twisted pairs handle normal interference fine. Shielded cable costs more, pulls harder, terminates slower, and punishes bad grounding. Installing shielded cable “just in case” in a quiet office buys cost and complexity with no benefit.

The grounding rule

A shield must be bonded to ground at both ends — through shielded components tied to the building’s telecommunications grounding system. Exception: runs between buildings with separate grounding electrodes should be bonded at one end only, to avoid ground loops. — through shielded jacks, shielded patch panels, and shielded couplers, the whole channel. Ground one end only and the shield becomes an antenna; ground neither and it is dead weight that cost extra. Every shielded installation needs a grounding plan, not just shielded cable.

Shielded cable values

Shielded cable carries more metal per foot (foil + drain wire, sometimes braid) — more copper-equivalent in recovery and a premium in resale. The jacket code (F/UTP, S/FTP) is the listing detail that separates it from UTP pricing. Data center and industrial pull-out skews shielded; office pull-out skews unshielded. Sort them apart — mixed lots get priced at the lower tier.

Bonding the shield: the parts list

A proper shielded channel needs: shielded cable with a drain wire (the bare conductor running alongside the foil — the shield’s electrical connection), shielded jacks (metal-bodied, with a ground contact for the drain wire), shielded patch panels (bonded to the rack’s ground bus), shielded patch cords, and a ground path from rack to the telecommunications grounding busbar. Miss any link and the shield floats. The drain wire is the detail DIYers miss: it must make solid contact with the jack’s shield — a foil wrap that never touches metal is decoration. When buying shielded cable used, check that the drain wire is present and continuous; without it, the shield cannot be bonded.

Do I need shielded Ethernet cable?

In electrically noisy environments (factories, hospitals, near power lines) or for 10-gigabit Cat6a runs: yes. In typical offices and homes: no — UTP is fine and cheaper.

What happens if shielded cable is not grounded?

The shield becomes an antenna that can make interference worse. Shielding must be bonded to ground at both ends through shielded components tied to the building’s telecom grounding system (one end only for runs between buildings with separate grounds).

Can I mix shielded and unshielded components?

Not effectively — one unshielded link in a shielded channel breaks the shield’s continuity. A shielded channel needs shielded cable, jacks, panels, and patch cords throughout.

Is shielded cable worth more as scrap?

Yes — more metal per foot (foil, drain wire, braid). And in resale, shielded Cat6a is premium stock. Keep it sorted from UTP.

What do F/UTP and S/FTP mean?
