Ratified in the early 2000s, specified to 250 MHz, and built with a spline that tamed crosstalk — Cat6 hit the sweet spot of performance and price so squarely that two decades later it is still the standard specification for new commercial and residential installs. CONSTRUCTION

What is inside a Cat6 cable

Four twisted pairs of 23 AWG solid copper (occasionally 24 AWG), each pair twisted at a different rate to cancel crosstalk, separated by a longitudinal spline — the plastic cross-web that is Cat6’s visual signature. Outer jacket in PVC (riser/CMR), low-smoke PVC or FEP (plenum/CMP), or LSZH for international work. Unshielded (U/UTP) is the standard; shielded variants (F/UTP) exist for noisy environments. The jacket print tells the story: category, AWG, pair count, shielding, fire rating, footage marks, and the UL/ETL listing — read it before you buy, sell, or install.

The 23 AWG standard

Cat6’s thicker 23-gauge conductors (vs 24 AWG in much Cat5e) mean lower resistance — better PoE performance and less voltage drop. It also makes the cable stiffer and the box heavier: a 1000-ft Cat6 box runs ~30+ lbs. Weight is a quick authenticity check — suspiciously light “Cat6” is often CCA.

The spline

That plastic cross inside is not packaging — it maintains pair separation along the entire run, which is what holds crosstalk down to Cat6 spec. Crush it with a staple or kink it hard and you have Cat5e performance in a Cat6 jacket. Handle accordingly.

Solid vs stranded

In-wall Cat6 is solid conductor (better electrical performance, punch-down friendly). Patch cords are stranded (flexible, survives bending). Never use stranded for long in-wall runs, never punch down stranded into a 110 block — see our solid vs stranded guide.

What Cat6 actually delivers

Certified performance: 1 Gbps to 100 meters (the full channel), 10 Gbps to 55 meters (shorter runs — fine for most in-building 10-gig). 250 MHz bandwidth. PoE/PoE+ fully supported; PoE++ (90W) workable with attention to bundle sizes. Real-world: Cat6 runs the overwhelming majority of office networks, schools, hospitals, and homes built since ~2005 — and will continue to, because gigabit remains plenty for most endpoints and 10-gig covers the uplinks.

What is Cat6 cable used for?

How fast is Cat6?

1 Gbps to the full 100-meter channel; 10 Gbps to about 55 meters. 250 MHz bandwidth.

Is Cat6 still good in 2026?

Absolutely — it remains the default specification for new installs. Cat6a only wins where full-distance 10-gig or heavy PoE++ is required.

How do I tell real Cat6 from fake?

Jacket print (CAT6, 23 AWG, UL/ETL listing), the internal spline, and weight (~30+ lbs per 1000-ft box). Suspiciously light or cheap cable is often CCA — avoid it.

Can Cat6 handle PoE++?

Yes, with attention to bundle sizes and heat — 23 AWG conductors handle it better than Cat5e. For dense PoE++ bundles, Cat6a is the safer choice.
