What is inside a Cat6 cable
Four twisted pairs of 23 AWG solid copper (occasionally 24 AWG), each pair twisted at a different rate to cancel crosstalk, separated by a longitudinal spline — the plastic cross-web that is Cat6’s visual signature. Outer jacket in PVC (riser/CMR), low-smoke PVC or FEP (plenum/CMP), or LSZH for international work. Unshielded (U/UTP) is the standard; shielded variants (F/UTP) exist for noisy environments. The jacket print tells the story: category, AWG, pair count, shielding, fire rating, footage marks, and the UL/ETL listing — read it before you buy, sell, or install.
The 23 AWG standard
Cat6’s thicker 23-gauge conductors (vs 24 AWG in much Cat5e) mean lower resistance — better PoE performance and less voltage drop. It also makes the cable stiffer and the box heavier: a 1000-ft Cat6 box runs ~30+ lbs. Weight is a quick authenticity check — suspiciously light “Cat6” is often CCA.
The spline
That plastic cross inside is not packaging — it maintains pair separation along the entire run, which is what holds crosstalk down to Cat6 spec. Crush it with a staple or kink it hard and you have Cat5e performance in a Cat6 jacket. Handle accordingly.
Solid vs stranded
In-wall Cat6 is solid conductor (better electrical performance, punch-down friendly). Patch cords are stranded (flexible, survives bending). Never use stranded for long in-wall runs, never punch down stranded into a 110 block — see our solid vs stranded guide.
