How to Terminate Cat6.

Termination is where good cable goes to fail.

More Ethernet problems come from bad terminations than bad cable. A perfect Cat6 run with sloppy RJ45s is a Cat5e channel — or a dead one. This guide covers the process that passes certification: the wiring standard, the untwist limit, and the mistakes that fail testers.

THE STANDARD

T568A vs T568B

Two wiring standards, one rule: pick one and use it on both ends. T568B is the de facto US standard (by far the most common); T568A is common in government work and some legacy installs. Wire one end A and the other B and you have made a crossover cable — correct for 1998, wrong for everything since (modern equipment auto-MDIXes, so it will probably still work, but it will fail certification and confuse the next tech). The color order matters: memorize your chosen standard and check every termination.

The untwist limit

No more than 1/2 inch (13 mm) of untwisted pairs at the termination — for Cat6, less is better. Every millimeter of untwisted pair is crosstalk the twists were preventing. The classic failure: stripping two inches “for room to work” and leaving it that way. Untwist only what the connector needs.

Keep the spline

On Cat6, keep the spline separator as far into the connector as possible — trim it only where the plug demands. Removing the spline early surrenders the pair separation that makes Cat6 Cat6.

Seat the jacket

The cable jacket should enter the plug body — the plug’s strain relief crimps the jacket, not the conductors. Conductors crimped without jacket support break at the slightest flex. If you can see colored conductors between jacket and plug, re-terminate.

KEYSTONES & PANELS

Punch-down done right

For permanent links, terminate solid cable onto keystone jacks or patch panels with a 110 punch-down tool — not RJ45 plugs (plugs are for patch cords). Keep twists tight to the IDC contacts, punch with the blade facing out (it trims the excess), and verify the wire map with a tester before you close up the wall. A $15 wire-map tester catches the opens, shorts, and miswires; certification (full frequency sweep) is the pro standard for commercial work.

MISTAKES

The five terminations that fail

1. Too much untwist — the #1 cause of failed Cat6 certification. 2. Wrong plug for the conductor — stranded plugs on solid cable (or vice versa). 3. Split pairs — one wire from two different pairs on the same pins; wire-map testers catch it, eyes often don’t. 4. Jacket not seated — conductors take the strain and break. 5. Kinked or stapled cable — deformed pairs are degraded pairs; use proper staples/velcro, never crush. Every one of these is a re-termination — cheap to prevent, expensive to find later.

T568A or T568B — which should I use?

T568B is the US de facto standard — use it unless the job specifies A. The critical rule: same standard on both ends.

How much untwist is allowed?

Maximum 1/2 inch (13 mm) per the standard; less is better for Cat6. Untwist only what the connector needs.

Can I put RJ45 plugs on solid Cat6?

Yes — with solid-rated (or universal) plugs. Match the plug to the conductor type.

Why does my cable fail certification?

The usual suspects: too much untwist, wrong plug type, split pairs, kinked cable, or CCA conductors. Re-terminate to spec before blaming the cable.

Do I need a certifier or is a wire-map tester enough?

Wire-map catches miswires, opens, and shorts — enough for most residential. Commercial work generally requires full certification (frequency sweep to the category limit).
