Follow one electron through a data center.

Every data center is a chain of equipment standing between the utility grid and the server rack, each link there to survive the failure of the one before it. Understand the chain and you understand every piece of equipment a data center retires — which is exactly what this guide walks through, link by link.

THE CHAIN

Seven links from the grid to the rack

1. Utility feed

Most data centers take utility power at medium voltage (often 12–35 kV) through dedicated feeders. Larger sites take two independent utility feeds from separate substations — the first layer of redundancy, and the reason dual-corded everything exists downstream.

2. Main switchgear

The main-tie-main lineup: utility breakers, tie breakers, and generator breakers in one assembly. This is the traffic cop of the entire facility — and one of the most valuable used assets in a decommissioning, since it is built to order and built to last.

3. Standby generators

Diesel generator farms — often 1–2.5 MW each in large facilities — that start within seconds of a utility failure. Data center generators are the prized units of the used market: exercised monthly under load banks, professionally maintained, and rarely run for real. Low hours, full records.

4. UPS systems

The uninterruptible power supply bridges the 10–30 seconds between utility failure and generator takeover, and cleans the power every second in between. Almost always double-conversion online topology at data center scale. Battery strings — VRLA or lithium-ion — are the consumable heart; their date codes drive used value.

5. PDUs and RPPs

Power distribution units step voltage down (typically 480V to 208/120V) and remote power panels distribute it to the rows. Dense with copper windings and bus bar — heavy, valuable, and frequently overlooked by sellers focused on the big-ticket UPS.

6. Busway and bus duct

Overhead busway carries power above the racks with plug-in tap-off points — flexible, and full of copper bars inside aluminum housings. Removed during every major reconfiguration or decommissioning.

7. Rack PDUs and grounding

The final link: rack-level power strips and the facility grounding grid. Even here there is copper — thousands of feet of branch wiring and grounding conductors that add up across a whole building.

Redundancy, in plain words

N = exactly enough. N+1 = one spare of everything. 2N = two complete independent systems. Higher tiers push further up this ladder — which is why Tier III and IV teardowns yield such clean, well-kept used equipment.

Where the value concentrates

Per ton, the richest streams are the UPS power electronics, the generator sets, and the copper — busway bars, PDU windings, feeder cable, and grounding. Our copper cable guide maps the metals in detail.

THE OTHER HALF

Cooling: where the power goes to die

Nearly every watt a data center consumes becomes heat, so cooling is the mirror image of the power chain. CRAC units (computer-room air conditioners, with built-in refrigeration) and CRAH units (air handlers using chilled water) push cold air into the racks and pull hot air out. Larger facilities use chilled-water plants with cooling towers, and the newest hyperscale builds use direct liquid cooling. Cooling equipment retires on its own cycle — compressors, coils, and piping all carry copper and aluminum value, and complete CRAH units have a healthy used market with mechanical contractors. When scoping a decommissioning, walk the mechanical rooms with the same attention you give the electrical rooms.

Power infrastructure questions, answered.

What is the difference between a UPS and a generator?

A UPS carries the load for seconds to minutes — bridging the gap when utility power fails and conditioning power continuously. A generator carries it for hours to days once started. Data centers need both: the UPS covers the 10–30 seconds the generator needs to start and synchronize.

What does 2N redundancy mean?

Two complete, independent power systems, each able to carry the full load alone. If any single component fails — or an entire path — the other carries everything without interruption. It is the standard for Tier IV facilities.

Why is used data center power equipment valuable?

It lived an easy, pampered life: climate-controlled rooms, professional maintenance programs, redundant duty (so individual units rarely worked hard), and documented service histories. Standby generators from data centers are famously low-hour.

What voltage do data centers use?

Utility feeds arrive at medium voltage (commonly 12–35 kV), stepped down to 480V three-phase for distribution, then to 208/120V at PDUs for the racks. Some hyperscale designs use 400V or higher-voltage DC distribution — nameplate voltage is always worth photographing.
