A modern data center does not buy a generator — it buys a power plant. Individual gensets run 2 to 3.5 MW each, installed in multiples so the facility survives any single failure. Newer AI projects commonly need 4,000 kVA of standby where 2,000–3,000 kVA was standard a few years ago, driven by AI training loads that dwarf anything the industry has fed before.
Redundancy has its own language here: 2N means two complete independent systems, either able to carry the full load. It is expensive, and it is the standard for facilities that cannot go dark.
