GFCI and AFCI are the most misunderstood devices in the modern panel — including by many homeowners who have them. GFCI protects people from shock; AFCI protects property from fire. They detect different dangers, trip for different reasons, and are required in different places. Here is the complete picture.

THE TWO

GFCI vs. AFCI

GFCI — Ground-Fault Circuit Interrupter

Detects current leaking to ground — as little as 5 milliamps, far below what kills. Protects people: in bathrooms, kitchens, garages, outdoors, and anywhere water meets electricity. Trips on ground faults: wet appliances, damaged cords in damp places, the hair dryer in the sink scenario. Required by code in wet/damp locations for decades.

AFCI — Arc-Fault Circuit Interrupter

Detects the electrical signature of arcing — damaged wires sparking inside walls. Protects property: arc faults are a leading cause of electrical fires. Required in bedrooms since 1999 (NEC), expanded to most living areas since. The nuisance-trip champion — see below.

Dual-function (DF)

Both protections in one breaker — the modern standard for new residential work. Costs more than either alone, and worth more used: the extra letters in the catalog number (e.g. HOM120DF) are real money. Do not lump DF breakers with standard ones when selling.

NUISANCE TRIPS

Why AFCIs trip “for no reason”

AFCI breakers listen for arcing signatures — but brushed motors (vacuums, treadmills), some LED drivers, and older electronics produce similar waveforms. The breaker cannot tell a dangerous arc from a noisy motor; it trips to be safe. Troubleshooting: run the suspect device on a non-AFCI circuit — if it behaves, the AFCI was confused, not broken. Note that code requires the AFCI regardless, so replacement with a standard breaker is not a legal fix. Persistent unexplained trips deserve an electrician: real arc faults are exactly what these exist to catch, and a damaged wire inside a wall is not a nuisance.

TESTING

The TEST button is not decorative

Both GFCI and AFCI breakers have TEST buttons — press monthly. The button simulates the fault the device guards against; if it does not trip, the protection has failed and the breaker needs replacement. A GFCI that does not trip on TEST is not protecting anyone. This thirty-second habit is the cheapest life insurance in your house — and failed TEST results are a legitimate reason to replace (and sell the working pulls from the upgrade).

Where each is required

The NEC’s requirements, in plain terms: GFCI — bathrooms, kitchens (countertop receptacles), garages, outdoors, crawl spaces, basements, laundry areas, and within 6 feet of sinks; essentially anywhere water and electricity can meet. AFCI — bedrooms first (since 1999), expanded over successive code cycles to living rooms, dens, hallways, closets, and most living areas; kitchens and bathrooms generally exempt (GFCI covers those). Local jurisdictions adopt different NEC editions, so the exact map varies — but the principle holds everywhere: wet places get GFCI, living spaces get AFCI, and new work increasingly gets dual-function. When upgrading a panel, count how many circuits need each type: DF breakers cost real money, and the count belongs in the project budget.

What is the difference between GFCI and AFCI?

GFCI guards against ground faults (current leaking to ground) to protect people from shock — required in wet locations. AFCI guards against arc faults (sparking wires) to prevent fires — required in living areas.

Why does my AFCI breaker keep tripping?

Often a brushed motor or electronic device producing waveforms that mimic arcing. Test the device on a non-AFCI circuit. Persistent unexplained trips need an electrician — real arc faults cause fires.

Can I replace an AFCI with a regular breaker to stop nuisance trips?

Not legally — code requires AFCI protection in those locations. Fix the actual cause (the device or the wiring), not the protection.

Do GFCI outlets and GFCI breakers do the same thing?

Yes — same 5mA ground-fault protection. A GFCI breaker protects the whole circuit; a GFCI receptacle protects downstream from that point. Do not stack them unnecessarily.

Are dual-function breakers worth more used?

Yes — they cost multiples of standard breakers new and hold the premium used. List them separately by catalog number.
