The honest answer depends entirely on the breaker's frame class. A house breaker and an industrial power breaker are different animals. Here's what trade sources report — qualified ranges, not promises.
Small residential branch breakers (15–30A): very little recoverable material. Experienced scrappers and refiner buyers consistently describe a small fraction of a gram to a few grams of contact material per unit. The contacts are a few millimeters across. These are generally not worth tearing down individually.
Molded-case breakers (MCCB) and insulated-case frames: substantially more contact material, scaling with frame size. Power/air breakers and large switchgear: contacts can reach dozens of grams per unit in the largest frames — and these are also the units most likely to have resale value intact.
Contactors and motor starters (150A and up): among the strongest sources in electrical gear. One trade buyer's teardown analysis describes contactors in NEMA sizes 3–6 as carrying very high silver content relative to the device, and estimates a residential panel yielding a few grams, a commercial panelboard more, and industrial switchgear far more. Treat those as one trade source's estimates, not certified assays.
Contact composition itself varies: trade buyers commonly describe electrical contacts in the range of roughly 20–40% silver content, with some formulations higher. And refiners pay on actual assayed silver weight at a percentage of value — contact weight is not silver weight, and silver weight is not cash. Anyone quoting you a flat per-breaker dollar figure without seeing the units is guessing.
That's also why you'll never see Ironcrest publish a per-breaker gram claim as our own: published numbers vary wildly, are often unsourced, and change with model and manufacturer. We work from what the unit actually is.
Recovering contact silver means opening the case, extracting the tips, separating them from copper backings, and accumulating enough to interest a refiner — who then assays and pays a percentage. For a bucket of common residential breakers, the hours involved almost always exceed the recovery. That's not an opinion; it's the consistent conclusion of people who do this for a living.
The math flips for quantity and scale: contractors with drums of commercial breakers, demolition crews pulling panelboards, plants closing out MCC rooms. At volume, the aggregate matters — and that's exactly the kind of lot we buy.
For most sellers, the metal is the smaller part of the value. An obsolete Zinsco, FPE Stab-Lok, or Pushmatic breaker — or a hard-to-find industrial frame — can be worth far more to the right buyer intact than its contacts could ever be as scrap. Scarcity beats chemistry.
So the right sequence is: identify what you have, value the whole unit, and only then consider any other path. That's what we do with every lot we're shown.
