How to identify copper.

Real copper announces itself — color, heft, and a magnet tell you most of what you need. Here is the full bench-test sequence, from the five-second checks to the definitive lab answer, plus the look-alikes that fool people.

THE FIVE-SECOND TESTS

Color, magnet, and heft

Color first. Copper is reddish-orange — the color of a new penny. Brass is golden-yellow, like polished gold, darkening to a brown patina with age. Bronze is reddish-brown or dark gold with a dark patina. Learn these three colors under good lighting and you will sort most material correctly on sight; poor lighting is the number-one cause of misidentification, so check in daylight or under a bright work light, and scratch through surface patina to see the true metal underneath. Magnet second. Copper, brass, and bronze are all non-ferrous and essentially non-magnetic — a magnet will not stick to any of them. The magnet test rules out steel, not the alloys from each other. Its real value is catching impostors: copper-clad steel wire and copper-plated steel parts are magnetic, and a magnet is the fastest way to keep them out of your copper loads. Run a strong magnet over every batch, especially wire. Heft third. Copper is dense — 8.96 grams per cubic centimeter — noticeably heavier than aluminum (2.7) and heavier-feeling than steel (7.8) in the hand. Bronze is heavier and denser than brass, which helps separate those two when color is ambiguous. Pick up a known piece of copper and a suspect piece side by side; the difference is something your hands learn fast.

CONFIRMATION TESTS

Sound, file, and XRF

When color and heft leave doubt, three more tests close the case. Sound: tap the piece — brass rings brighter, bronze higher-pitched, copper low and deep. It takes practice, but experienced scrappers use sound constantly on fittings and valves. File test: file a small spot through any surface coating or patina. Copper files to a bright reddish-orange; brass shows yellow; bronze shows its darker reddish-brown. A grinder spark test also works: copper gives short, greenish sparks with little forking, very different from steel's bright branching shower — though sparks alone will not separate copper from its alloys. XRF: the definitive answer is a handheld XRF (x-ray fluorescence) analyzer, which reads actual chemistry in seconds. Brass and bronze identification is harder than copper's precisely because different alloy grades share similar applications but differ in chemistry — color and sound get you close, XRF gets you certain. Buyers with XRF guns use them at intake, and alloy scrap (brass, bronze) is typically routed to brass mills, ingot makers, and foundries rather than copper cathode refiners, which is why correct identification protects your price: copper-priced-as-brass is money left on the table, and brass-mixed-into-copper is a downgrade for the whole load.

What fools people

The classic traps: copper-clad steel — copper coating over a steel core, common in some wire and grounding products — looks right until the magnet grabs it; brass mistaken for copper in plumbing fittings, where golden-yellow reads as "close enough" under dim basement light; bronze mistaken for brass in valves and water meters, costing the seller the bronze premium; painted or tinned copper, where coating hides the true color — file through it; and aluminum wire, which is dramatically lighter and duller. For insulated wire, strip back a small section of jacket to check the conductor: bright reddish-orange strands mean copper; silvery strands mean tinned copper or aluminum. When in doubt about a whole batch, do not guess — photograph it, describe what you see, and let the buyer grade it. Misidentified material discovered at verification gets repriced, and honest uncertainty always prices better than confident error.

How can I tell copper from brass?
