NEMA enclosure types rate how well an electrical enclosure keeps the environment out: dust, water, oil, corrosive agents. The type number on a panel, disconnect, or control box tells you where it can live — indoors, outdoors, washdown areas, hazardous sites. Misread it and equipment dies young; read it right and every used enclosure lists itself.

Rain, sleet, snow — the outdoor workhorse. Meter mains, outdoor disconnects, rooftop equipment. Ventilated but weather-shedding. If it is outside and not stainless, it is probably 3R.
Hose-directed water (4); plus corrosion resistance (4X — usually stainless steel or fiberglass). Food plants, car washes, marine, wastewater. 4X stainless enclosures are among the most valuable used boxes per pound.
Industrial indoor: keeps dust, dirt, and dripping oil/coolant out. Machine shops, factories, anywhere with airborne grime. No knockouts — sealed by gasket.
Explosion-proof for classified areas (flammable gas/vapor = Type 7, combustible dust = Type 9). Heavy cast construction, precision-machined flanges. Specialized, expensive, and strongly valued used — the installed base in refineries and chemical plants needs exact replacements.
NEMA types are the North American system; IP codes (IP65, IP66) are the international IEC system. They do not convert directly — NEMA includes corrosion and construction requirements IP ignores. Equipment marked with both is built for world markets.
Used enclosure values track material and rating: stainless 4X first, then 4, then 3R, then 12, then 1. Large stainless enclosures and hazardous-location (7/9) boxes command the strongest prices. When listing: state the NEMA type (from the label or construction), material (painted steel, stainless, fiberglass), dimensions, and condition of gaskets and latches. An empty stainless 4X cabinet is worth real money — never scrap one unpriced.
The complete NEMA ladder, indoors to hazardous: 1 — indoor, general purpose. 2 — indoor, drip-tight. 3 — outdoor, rain/sleet/snow. 3R — outdoor, rainproof (the common one). 3S — outdoor, operable in ice. 4 — watertight, hose-directed water. 4X — watertight plus corrosion-resistant. 5 — dust-tight indoor. 6/6P — submersible. 12 — industrial dust/drip-tight, no knockouts. 13 — oil/coolant-tight for machine tools. 7 — hazardous, gas/vapor (explosion-proof). 9 — hazardous, combustible dust. The suffix matters as much as the number: a 4 and a 4X look similar and live in different worlds (and price bands). When the label is gone, material tells the story — stainless or fiberglass means 4X, cast and bolted-flange means 7/9.
Type 3R minimum for rain/snow exposure. Choose 4/4X where hose-directed water or corrosive conditions exist. Check local code and the equipment listing.
Both are watertight against hose-directed water; 4X adds corrosion resistance (typically stainless steel or fiberglass). 4X costs more and holds more used value.
