Open a house breaker and an industrial power breaker and you're looking at the same job done at wildly different scales. Here's how the four frame classes compare — and why frame size decides what's inside.

The four frames, smallest to largest.

MCB (miniature circuit breaker): the residential branch breaker — compact molded case, small contacts, basic arc chute, thermal-magnetic trip. MCCB (molded-case circuit breaker): the commercial/industrial workhorse — bigger everything, adjustable trip settings on many frames. ICCB (insulated-case): larger still, built for higher interrupt ratings and longer service with maintainable parts. ACB (air/power circuit breaker): the giants — draw-out construction, replaceable contact assemblies, electronic trip units.

Same physics throughout; the scale changes everything about the metal inside.

Where the contact metal scales.

Contacts grow with frame size because bigger frames interrupt bigger faults — and surviving a fault means absorbing more arc energy without welding shut. A residential MCB's contacts are small buttons a few millimeters across; a power breaker's contacts are substantial assemblies. That's why "how much silver is in a breaker" has no single answer: the frame class is the answer.

Arc chutes scale the same way — from a few splitter plates in an MCB to serious arc-management hardware in large frames — and so do the copper current paths and steel mechanisms.

Trip units grow up too.

Small frames use fixed thermal-magnetic trip units: a bimetal strip for overloads, an electromagnet for short circuits. Larger frames add adjustability — dials for pickup and delay — and the biggest frames go electronic, with current sensors and microprocessor-based protection curves. What this means when you're selling.

Two practical takeaways. First, read the frame, not just the amps: a 100A MCCB and a 100A MCB are different devices with different markets. The catalog number on the label tells the story — which is why we always ask for label photos.

Second, large-frame and obsolete industrial breakers are the units most likely to be worth real money intact. If you're clearing a commercial panel or an MCC room, photograph everything before anything gets dismantled.

What's the difference between MCB and MCCB?

MCB (miniature circuit breaker) is the small residential/commercial branch device; MCCB (molded-case circuit breaker) is the larger industrial frame with bigger contacts, stronger arc chutes, and often adjustable trip settings. Frame size drives both capability and value.

Do bigger breakers always have more silver?

Bigger frames carry bigger contacts — that's the general rule, because interrupting larger faults needs more contact metal. But alloy, design, and service history all vary, so frame class sets the range, not an exact figure.

What is an insulated-case breaker?
