Fittings, valves, meters, bushings, fixtures — if it’s yellow brass, red brass, or bronze, Ironcrest buys it. Send photos for today’s price and get same-day pickup anywhere in Chicago.
Brass and bronze are their own categories — they go to brass mills and foundries, not copper refiners. Keep them out of your copper loads and they earn their own price.
Color. Yellow brass is golden-yellow, like a trumpet. Bronze and red brass are reddish-brown, closer to copper. That’s the first and usually the last test you need.
The file test. Old brass and bronze grow a dark patina that lies. File or grind a small spot — the true metal shows underneath instantly.
Weight. Bronze is noticeably heavier than yellow brass for the same size. Pick up two fittings and you’ll feel it.
The magnet. Neither brass nor bronze is magnetic, so a magnet won’t separate them — it only catches the steel fakes. Color does the real work.
Color is the fastest test: brass is golden-yellow, bronze is reddish-brown. File through any dark patina to see the true metal. A magnet won’t separate them — neither is magnetic.
Yes. We’ll grade and sort honestly at pickup. Separated loads earn more, so if you can keep yellow brass, red brass, and bronze apart, it pays — but we’ll buy it mixed.
No minimum. A bucket of fittings or a barrel of valves — if it’s brass or bronze, it’s worth a call.
No — and neither does anyone honest. Markets move daily. Send photos for today’s actual price.
