Low- and medium-voltage switchgear lineups — metal-clad assemblies with drawout breakers, protective relays, and metering — are built to order, built to last 30+ years, and brutally expensive new. That combination makes used switchgear the blue-chip of the electrical aftermarket: facilities expand with it, contractors hunt it, and a clean lineup with documentation commands serious money.

ANATOMY

What a lineup is made of

A switchgear lineup is a row of vertical sections bolted together: each section houses a drawout circuit breaker (racks in and out on rails for safe maintenance), protective relays (the brains — overcurrent, differential, ground-fault protection), metering (CTs, PTs, and meters), and bus work connecting the sections. Buyers price the breakers, the relays, and the completeness of the lineup separately — then add the project value of a matched set.

Drawout breakers

The heart of the lineup. Low-voltage power breakers (800–6000A) and medium-voltage vacuum breakers, each rackable for isolated maintenance. Tested, complete drawout breakers with trip units are the single most valuable component — photograph the breaker nameplates individually.

Protective relays

Electromechanical classics (still in service everywhere) through modern microprocessor relays (Schweitzer/SEL, GE Multilin, ABB). Modern relays hold strong resale; even vintage electromechanical relays have a replacement market.

Completeness

A complete lineup — all sections, all breakers, all relays, drawings — is worth far more than the sum of scattered parts. Keep lineups together. The one-line diagrams and wiring schematics that came with it are part of the asset; do not throw away the drawing set.

VALUE FACTORS

What sets switchgear value

Voltage class

Low-voltage (600V class) lineups serve the broadest market. Medium-voltage (5kV, 15kV) serves utilities and heavy industry — fewer buyers, bigger tickets. Know your class from the nameplate.

Breaker condition and trip units

Breakers that rack smoothly, trip units that test clean, contacts without pitting. Missing or failed trip units are the most common value-killer — they are expensive to replace.

Documentation

One-lines, schematics, relay settings, test reports, maintenance logs. A documented lineup sells to engineers; an undocumented one sells to gamblers. The paperwork can be worth five figures on a large lineup.

Vintage and parts support

Currently supported product lines (still manufactured or with factory parts) trade at a premium. Orphaned vintages still sell — the installed base needs parts — but price accordingly and say what is missing.

What to photograph

The lineup wide shot, each section open showing the breaker, every breaker nameplate, the relay fronts, and the manufacturer nameplate with serial numbers. Plus the drawing set if you have it. Ten minutes, complete valuation.

Removal reality

Switchgear is heavy, tall, and top-heavy — professional riggers, not a forklift and hope. Sections unbolt for transport. Plan the removal with the buyer; botched rigging destroys value faster than age ever could.

VOLTAGE CLASSES

Low-voltage vs. medium-voltage switchgear

Low-voltage switchgear (600V class and below) is the commercial/industrial workhorse: 800–6000A power breakers feeding factories, hospitals, and large buildings. Broadest buyer pool, fastest-moving used market. Medium-voltage switchgear (5kV, 15kV, up to 38kV) serves utilities, heavy industry, and large campuses with vacuum or SF6 breakers. Fewer buyers, much bigger tickets, and testing matters more — insulation resistance, contact resistance, and relay calibration reports are expected, not optional. If you are selling medium-voltage gear, the test reports are half the value proposition: no engineer buys a 15kV breaker on looks alone. Photograph the voltage class from the nameplate first — it determines which market you are selling into.

Do you buy individual breakers from a lineup?

Yes — tested drawout breakers with good trip units are valuable on their own. But a complete lineup is worth more together than parted out, so talk to us before splitting one up.

What paperwork should I keep?

Everything: one-line diagrams, wiring schematics, relay setting files, test reports, maintenance logs, and the original submittals. Documentation is a major value component.

How is switchgear removed?

By professional riggers — sections unbolt and move individually. Coordinate with the buyer before anyone touches it.
