Speed control is the headline, but VFDs earn their keep in quieter ways: soft starting eliminates the 6–8× inrush current that stresses motors, belts, and gearboxes — motors last longer on drives. Process control — pressure, flow, and tension held precisely by varying speed instead of throttling valves. Energy monitoring — modern drives report power consumption, becoming the plant’s cheapest submetering. Motor protection built in — overload, phase loss, and overtemperature protection come standard. Regenerative braking on four-quadrant drives feeds braking energy back to the line instead of burning it in resistors. What does a VFD do?
It varies the frequency and voltage supplied to an AC motor, controlling its speed — saving major energy on fans and pumps, enabling soft starts, and giving precise process control.
Can a VFD run a three-phase motor on single-phase?
Yes, with derating — most VFDs accept single-phase input and output three-phase, typically derated to ~50–65%. The standard home-shop solution for running 3-phase machinery.
How long do VFDs last?
10–15 years typical; DC bus capacitors (7–10 years) are the life-limiting component. Heat is the main killer — ventilated, clean drives last longest.
Are used VFDs worth buying?
For spares and replacements, absolutely — downtime costs dwarf the drive price. Buy the same series your plant standardizes on, verify it powers up clean, and check capacitor age.
What is the difference between a VFD and a soft starter?
A soft starter only ramps voltage up/down at startup (reducing inrush) — then the motor runs full speed. A VFD controls speed continuously. Soft starters are cheaper; VFDs save energy and control the process.
