What Tools Contain Tungsten Carbide? (And What’s Worth Separating.)

Tungsten carbide hides in machine shops, on saw blades, and inside mining bits — and most people either walk past it or mistake coated steel for it. Here are the three tiers, how to tell, and when separating it pays.

The three tiers of carbide.

Everything that “has carbide” falls into one of three tiers. Know which tier you are holding before you price it:

  • SOLID carbide — the good stuff. Indexable inserts, end mills, drills, taps, reamers, and burrs/rotary files. The whole working end is carbide.
  • BRAZED / TIPPED — real carbide, joined to steel. Carbide-tipped saw blades, router bits, brazed lathe tool bits and boring bars, snowplow blades with carbide inserts brazed into steel segments, and planer/jointer knives. The carbide is genuine; it is married to steel with braze alloy.
  • IMPOSTERS — not carbide at all. TiN-coated HSS looks like carbide with its gold-colored coating, but underneath it is ordinary high-speed steel. Ceramic inserts are not carbide either. The coating confusion is the #1 mistake sellers make.

Value runs solid > brazed > coated steel (which is just HSS). Never mix the tiers in one box — buyers grade them separately and mixed loads price at the lowest tier.

Beyond the toolbox: mining, energy, and wear parts.

Carbide lives far beyond the machine shop:

  • Mining and drilling — button bits and tricone inserts. Community teardowns report one 400-pound tricone bit holding roughly 35 pounds of carbide.
  • Road work — milling teeth with carbide tips.
  • Oil and gas — downhole nozzles, valves, and wear components.
  • Metal forming — stamping and forming dies, punches, guides.
  • Wear parts everywhere — nozzles, seals, valve components, guides in any industry that grinds material for a living.
  • Dental burs — solid tungsten carbide, and a micro-niche almost no buyer advertises for specifically.

If a part’s job is cutting, grinding, or surviving abrasion, check it for carbide before it goes in the steel bin.

How to tell carbide from steel.

The test ladder, in order — no lab required:

  1. Weight — the “heavy hand” test. Carbide is dramatically denser than steel. Pick it up; carbide feels wrong-heavy for its size.
  2. Magnet. Carbide is only weakly magnetic — a faint pull versus steel’s hard grab. Useful, not decisive.
  3. Spark test. Touch it to a grinder: carbide throws short, dull-orange sparks; high-speed steel throws bright white fireworks.
  4. Scratch and sound. Carbide barely scratches and rings with a high “tink”; steel gives a duller “clunk.”

Buyers escalate from there: XRF guns for instant alloy reads and lab assays for exact tungsten content. That is how final grading works — the ladder above just tells you what is worth sending in.

Is separating carbide worth it?

The community’s honest answer: sometimes — do the math. Un-brazing tool bits runs about 10 pounds of recovered carbide per hour on bits that are 20–25% carbide by weight. Brazed carbide always prices under clean solid carbide, and as the forums put it: “some brazed inserts are just not worth the trouble — but some are.” Whether it pays depends on how fast you are and what your time is worth.

Methods ranked by the people who do it: coal forge, fire-brick forge, rosebud torch (slow), induction (clean but slow). One serious warning: cadmium-bearing braze alloys give off toxic fumes when heated. Ventilation and a respirator, or do not do it at all.

The alternative many sellers choose: sell brazed tools whole to a carbide buyer who prices them as brazed. No torch, no fumes, no hours.

What carbide buyers actually want.

Sort it the way buyers buy it:

  • Clean — no braze alloy attached.
  • Dirty — braze alloy still on it. Sold separately, on its own pricing.
  • Sludge — grinding sludge, swarf, and dust from manufacturing. Saleable at its own grade.

As one longtime buyer tells sellers: sort out the stuff with braze alloy. Brazed carbide is typically bought on special pricing and never mixed with standard scrap — one mixed box downgrades everything in it. When in doubt, keep the tiers in separate boxes and let the buyer’s XRF sort out the rest.

Why domestic carbide demand is strong.

Market context, worth knowing: in August 2026 the U.S. placed tungsten waste and scrap under a Defense Production Act allocation rule running through August 2027 — domestic sellers sell to domestic buyers. And tungsten has had a historic run: the IEA charted roughly a 622% price rise from January 2025 to April 2026, with ammonium paratungstate more than tripling in 2026 alone.

Translation for sellers: domestic carbide has a deep home market right now, and buyers who assay honestly and pay for grade are the ones to sell to.
