AFCI trips: the nuisance-trip champion
Arc-fault breakers (AFCI) are the most complained-about breakers in American homes — and usually the least understood. AFCIs listen for the electrical signature of arcing, but motors with brushes (vacuums, treadmills, older power tools) and some electronics produce waveforms that look like arcing to the breaker. The result: trips with no overload and no fault. Before replacing the breaker: try the device on a non-AFCI circuit — if it runs fine there, the AFCI is doing its best with a confusing signal, not failing. Note that code requires AFCI protection in most living areas regardless, so “downgrading” to a standard breaker is not a legal fix. Persistent unexplained AFCI trips deserve an electrician — real arc faults are exactly the fire-starters AFCIs exist to catch.

Why does my breaker keep tripping?
Usually an overloaded circuit — too many high-draw devices on one circuit. Unplug some loads and move them to other circuits. If it trips with nothing plugged in, or trips instantly every time, the wiring or breaker needs an electrician.
Is it dangerous to keep resetting a tripped breaker?
Resetting once to test is fine. Repeatedly resetting a breaker that keeps tripping is not — you are overriding a safety device that is detecting a real problem. Find the cause or call an electrician.
Can a breaker go bad and trip for no reason?
Yes — breakers wear out. A breaker that trips below its rated load, feels hot, or will not stay reset may have failed internally. Breakers are inexpensive; the service call to diagnose is the real cost.
Why does my breaker trip when I run the microwave and toaster together?
Classic overload: both appliances draw 10–15 amps on a 15- or 20-amp circuit. Run them on different circuits — this is the single most common tripping scenario in kitchens.
Do breakers trip more in summer?
They can — breaker thermal elements respond to ambient heat, so a loaded panel in a hot garage trips sooner. It is also air-conditioner season: the biggest residential load of the year.
