Why Do Breakers Trip?

Overload, short circuit, ground fault — the three reasons breakers trip, how to tell which one you have, and when to call an electrician.

Your breaker is doing its job. Here is which job.

A tripped breaker is not broken — it is a safety device that just saved your wiring from damage or your house from fire. Breakers trip for three reasons: too much current for too long (overload), a sudden massive surge of current (short circuit), or current leaking where it should not go (ground fault). Figuring out which one happened tells you whether you just need to unplug the space heater or call an electrician.

Safety note: this guide explains why breakers trip. It is not a DIY electrical manual. If a breaker trips repeatedly, smells hot, or will not reset, call a licensed electrician.

THE THREE CAUSES

Why breakers trip

1. Overload — too much, too long

The most common cause. A 15-amp circuit carrying 22 amps of space heaters, hair dryers, and gaming PCs will trip — not instantly, but after the breaker’s thermal element heats up. That delay is intentional: breakers tolerate brief surges (motor startup) but not sustained overload. The fix: move loads to other circuits. If it keeps happening, the circuit is undersized for how you live — an electrician can add capacity.

2. Short circuit — the dangerous one

Hot wire touches neutral or ground: current spikes to thousands of amps instantly, and the breaker’s magnetic element slams it open in milliseconds. You may see a flash, hear a pop, or smell ozone. Do not just reset it. A short circuit means damaged wiring or a failed device — find the cause first. Repeated short-circuit trips can damage the breaker itself.

3. Ground fault — current leaking away

Electricity escaping its intended path — through water, damaged insulation, or a person. GFCI breakers (and receptacles) detect imbalances as small as 5 milliamps and trip. If a GFCI trips in a bathroom, kitchen, garage, or outdoors, suspect moisture or a failing appliance before suspecting the breaker.

What to do when a breaker trips

Reset it properly

Push the handle fully to OFF first, then firmly to ON. Breakers must be switched fully off before they will reset — flipping straight to ON does nothing. If it holds, it was likely a transient overload.

If it trips again immediately

Unplug everything on the circuit and try once more. Holds with nothing plugged in? Plug things back one at a time — the culprit announces itself. Trips with nothing connected? The wiring or the breaker is the problem — call an electrician.

When to call an electrician

Burning smell, scorch marks, buzzing, a breaker that is hot to the touch, or any trip you cannot explain. Also: if your panel is a Zinsco, Federal Pacific, or Challenger — see our obsolete breaker guide before trusting it.

THE SPECIAL CASE

AFCI trips: the nuisance-trip champion

Arc-fault breakers (AFCI) are the most complained-about breakers in American homes — and usually the least understood. AFCIs listen for the electrical signature of arcing, but motors with brushes (vacuums, treadmills, older power tools) and some electronics produce waveforms that look like arcing to the breaker. The result: trips with no overload and no fault. Before replacing the breaker: try the device on a non-AFCI circuit — if it runs fine there, the AFCI is doing its best with a confusing signal, not failing. Note that code requires AFCI protection in most living areas regardless, so “downgrading” to a standard breaker is not a legal fix. Persistent unexplained AFCI trips deserve an electrician — real arc faults are exactly the fire-starters AFCIs exist to catch.

Why does my breaker keep tripping?

Usually an overloaded circuit — too many high-draw devices on one circuit. Unplug some loads and move them to other circuits. If it trips with nothing plugged in, or trips instantly every time, the wiring or breaker needs an electrician.

Is it dangerous to keep resetting a tripped breaker?

Resetting once to test is fine. Repeatedly resetting a breaker that keeps tripping is not — you are overriding a safety device that is detecting a real problem. Find the cause or call an electrician.

Can a breaker go bad and trip for no reason?

Yes — breakers wear out. A breaker that trips below its rated load, feels hot, or will not stay reset may have failed internally. Breakers are inexpensive; the service call to diagnose is the real cost.

Why does my breaker trip when I run the microwave and toaster together?

Classic overload: both appliances draw 10–15 amps on a 15- or 20-amp circuit. Run them on different circuits — this is the single most common tripping scenario in kitchens.

Do breakers trip more in summer?

They can — breaker thermal elements respond to ambient heat, so a loaded panel in a hot garage trips sooner. It is also air-conditioner season: the biggest residential load of the year.
