Five grounding mistakes inspectors find
1. Neutral bonded in the subpanel — the classic; the green screw that should have been removed. 2. Missing main bonding jumper — the one connection the whole system depends on, left out. 3. Ground rod as the only “safety” — no equipment grounding conductor run with the circuit. 4. Paint under the lug — bonding connections made to painted enclosures without scraping to bare metal; the paint insulates the “bond.” 5. Mixed grounding electrodes unbonded — a new ground rod driven for an addition but never bonded to the existing system, creating potential differences between “grounds.” Every one of these is a failed inspection at best and a shock or fire hazard at worst. If you are buying a facility’s electrical gear, the grounding system’s condition tells you how the plant was maintained — sloppy bonding usually means sloppy everything.

What is the difference between grounding and bonding?
Grounding connects the system to the earth (voltage stability, lightning path). Bonding connects metal parts together into a low-impedance fault path back to the source — bonding is what trips the breaker on a fault.
Why must ground and neutral be separate in a subpanel?
They bond only at the main service. Bonding them in a subpanel puts neutral current on the grounding conductors — energizing enclosures and creating shock hazards.
Does a ground rod protect against shock?
Not by itself — earth resistance is far too high to trip a breaker. Shock protection comes from the bonded equipment-grounding path that clears faults fast.
What is a ufer ground?
A concrete-encased electrode — rebar in the foundation footing, bonded to the electrical system. Required in new construction with qualifying footings; an excellent grounding electrode.
