A short history of the breaker.

1879: Thomas Edison patents a circuit-protector concept (U.S. Patent 223,898) — though his commercial systems relied on fuses. 1920s: Hugo Stotz and Heinrich Schachtner at Brown, Boveri & Cie develop the modern miniature circuit breaker, the ancestor of every MCB in your panel. Mid-1900s: the thermal-magnetic breaker becomes the standard — bimetal plus electromagnet, the pairing still inside most breakers today. Today: electronic trip units, arc-fault and ground-fault protection, and communicating breakers.

A century of refinement on one idea: stop the current before it stops you.

Anatomy in one paragraph.

Handle, latch, trip unit (thermal bimetal + magnetic coil), moving and stationary contacts with their silver-alloy tips, arc chute, line and load lugs, molded case. Every part has a job; the contacts and the arc chute do the violent work, the trip unit does the thinking, and the case keeps the violence inside.

Ratings that actually matter.

The number on the handle is the ampere rating — the load it carries. The number that matters in a fault is the interrupt rating (kAIC): a 20A breaker rated 10kAIC can safely stop 10,000 amps of short-circuit current — 500× its rated load — without failing. Frame size (MCB → MCCB → insulated-case → power) sets the scale of everything: contacts, arc chute, and value.

Why dead brands still matter.

FPE, Zinsco, Pushmatic (Bulldog), Challenger, Sylvania, Gould, Bryant, Wadsworth, Crouse-Hinds — brand names that vanished, whose panels still power homes and plants. That's exactly why their breakers stay scarce and valuable: someone needs that specific unit to keep equipment running, and nobody makes it anymore. Obsolete doesn't mean worthless — in breakers, it often means the opposite.

Who invented the circuit breaker?

Thomas Edison patented an early circuit-protector concept in 1879, but the modern miniature circuit breaker traces to 1920s work by Hugo Stotz and Heinrich Schachtner at Brown, Boveri & Cie (BBC).

What does kAIC mean?

Kiloamps Interrupting Capacity — the maximum short-circuit current a breaker can safely interrupt. A 10kAIC rating means 10,000 amps. It's the number that matters in a fault, distinct from the ampere rating on the handle.

Why are old Zinsco and FPE breakers valuable?

Because the brands are obsolete but their panels are still in service — replacement demand with no new supply. Scarcity, not metal content, drives the value.

What's the difference between a breaker and a fuse?

Both stop overcurrent; a fuse does it once by melting, a breaker does it repeatedly by tripping and resetting. Edison's systems used fuses; breakers won on reusability.

Are Pushmatic breakers thermal-only?

Pushmatic (Bulldog) designs are widely described as thermal-only, without the instantaneous magnetic trip element of modern thermal-magnetic breakers — one reason they're a popular obsolete-brand topic.

Do breakers wear out?

Electrically, yes — every arc erodes a little contact material, which is why breakers have finite electrical endurance. Mechanically they can also stiffen with age (a known Pushmatic trait). Industrial breakers often have replaceable contact assemblies; residential ones are replaced whole.
