Text a photo of your carbide — inserts, end mills, brazed tooling, the whole pile — to 312-880-8174.
Hobart is manufacturing and distribution country along the I-65 corridor — industrial parks mixing light manufacturing and logistics, with shops serving steel country to the north and the rest of Lake County to the south. Ironcrest buys tungsten carbide scrap from those shops and distributors. We are about 62 miles, roughly an hour from our shop in Rolling Meadows. Text a photo to 312-880-8174 for today’s number.
UPDATED OCTOBER 2026
If you are looking to sell carbide scrap in Hobart, these are the five categories we buy — graded honestly, paid at top-of-market, with my firm $18–$20-a-pound offer published and no games.
Worn indexable inserts from lathes and mills — the everyday carbide scrap every manufacturing shop produces.
Solid carbide end mills, drills, and reamers — worn, chipped, or coated tooling still holds real tungsten value.
Carbide-tipped saw blades, brazed lathe bits, and construction bits — we separate the carbide from the steel and pay for what is actually there.
Fine carbide sludge from grinding and sharpening operations — we can test it and make an offer instead of letting it sit in a drum.
Rings, rods, blocks, and balance weights — dense tungsten alloy that grades on its own scale and pays well when handled right.
Hobart sits in a useful middle. To the north is steel country — mills and the service operations around them. To the south is the rest of Lake County’s industrial base. Hobart itself is manufacturing and distribution along the I-65 corridor: industrial parks mixing light manufacturing with logistics warehouses, and shops that supply, repair, and tool both directions. Between the light manufacturers and the shops feeding steel country, carbide tooling moves through this town at real volume — inserts, end mills, drills, brazed bits, and wear parts.
We are about 62 miles, roughly an hour from our shop in Rolling Meadows, and we run scheduled pickup routes across Northwest Indiana — the I-65 corridor is one of the cleanest legs on the route. Send photos and Sonny will tell you when he can be there. You will not get a specialist’s grade from the general yards along the interstate, and you should not settle for one.
General yards are built for tonnage, not for tungsten. Your carbide goes into a mixed load, gets a blended rate, and the material that should pay the best ends up subsidizing the material that pays the worst. You handed over premium tungsten carbide and got paid like it was average — because the yard’s price was an average.
Ironcrest buys carbide for a living, and it shows in the grading. We test material with XRF and assay when it counts, and every category pays on its own grade. Clean wear parts grade at the top of the market. Coated or chipped tooling is graded honestly where it belongs. Brazed tooling is separated so you get paid for the carbide, not the steel it is attached to. You watch the grading, you hear the number before anything moves, and you get paid for what you actually have. That is why sellers who know their material call a specialist first.
There is no sales team at Ironcrest. When you call or text, Sonny answers — and Sonny is the one who grades your material, quotes it, picks it up, and pays you. One man, start to finish, with his own name on every deal.
With carbide, the quote is only as honest as the person making it. You want the grader, the buyer, and the paymaster to be the same person — accountable, reachable, and standing in front of you. Text a photo to 312-880-8174 and you will get today’s firm number from Sonny himself, the same voice you will hear when the scheduled pickup run comes through Hobart.
Yes — from machine shops, light manufacturers, and distribution shops along the I-65 corridor. Inserts, end mills, drills, brazed tooling, and heavy alloy, in any quantity worth a pickup.
Text a photo of your material to 312-880-8174 and Sonny will tell you today’s firm number — same day, no games. I publish my price right on this page: a firm $18–$20 a pound for clean, sorted tungsten carbide inserts, end mills, and drills — way more than the $8–$15 national board average. You can read how carbide prices are set, and you will always get a firm number before anything moves.
We make scheduled pickup runs across Northwest Indiana. Send photos and Sonny will tell you when he can be there. If the lot is small or the timing does not line up, you can mail it in with a prepaid label — either way, text first and get today’s number.
By grade and condition. Clean solid carbide tooling grades at the top of the market; coated, chipped, or brazed material is separated and graded on its own. We test with XRF and assay when it counts, and you get paid for what you actually have — never a blended yard rate.
Real carbide is heavy for its size and cannot be filed — see our guide to spotting real tungsten carbide. If you are still unsure, text a photo to 312-880-8174 and Sonny will tell you straight whether it is worth a trip.
Ironcrest also buys carbide scrap in nearby Merrillville, Portage, and Gary. See all service areas.
