A panel or switchgear lineup is a metal inventory wearing an enclosure. Here's the metal-by-metal map — what each part is made of, where the value concentrates, and what to photograph.

Copper: the bus and the windings.

Copper does the heavy current-carrying: bus bars distributing power to every breaker position, lugs and stabs, and the windings inside control transformers mounted in the panel. Bus bar is high-grade copper — thick, clean, and heavy. In switchgear lineups, the bus work alone can be a serious quantity of copper.

Aluminum, steel, and the enclosure.

Aluminum shows up as neutral/ground bars and sometimes as bus in commercial gear — lighter than copper, still very much a commodity. Steel is the enclosure itself plus mounting hardware, and galvanized or painted steel has its own scrap stream. Neither is precious, but at panel scale both add up — and a clean, straight enclosure has reuse value beyond scrap.

Silver alloy: the contacts, again.

Every breaker in the panel carries its silver-alloy contact tips — small per breaker, meaningful across a full panelboard, significant in a switchgear lineup full of large frames. The panel-level math is why electricians' and demolition crews' panel pulls are worth a buyer's attention: dozens of breakers' contacts in one lot, plus everything below.

Gold flash and the control layer.

Panels with control sections carry PCBs with gold-flash edge connectors and relays with gold-plated contacts — microns thick, but real, and aggregated across a lineup it counts. Control transformers add copper windings; pilot devices and meters add small brass and copper bits.

The rule for the whole panel: sell the system, not the shred. A complete panelboard or switchgear lineup — breakers in place, bus intact, labels legible — is quotable as a unit. Dismantled into a bucket of parts, it's a sorting job.

Should I pull the breakers out before selling a panel?

Usually not. A complete panelboard with breakers in place and labels legible is quotable as a unit — and the breakers may have individual resale value. Photograph it whole first.

What metals are in switchgear vs a house panel?

Same families, bigger scale: more copper bus, larger breaker frames with bigger silver-alloy contacts, more steel, and often control sections with gold-flash boards. Switchgear is a panel scaled up to industrial.
