Sell Carbide Grinding Sludge, Swarf & Powder

Every sharpening and grinding operation produces sludge — the gray paste of carbide dust, coolant, and metal fines — and most shops pay to have it hauled away. Stop. That sludge is worth real money. I am Sonny Johns of Ironcrest Industrial Surplus, and I pay top money for carbide grinding sludge, swarf, and powders nationwide, priced on contained tungsten with a custom quote for your drums. UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

HOW SLUDGE PRICES

Sludge is priced on contained tungsten — here is what that means.

Grinding sludge does not price like solid tooling, because a drum of sludge is not a drum of carbide. It is a mixture: fine carbide particles, grinding wheel grit, coolant or oil, and whatever else fell in. "Contained tungsten" means the actual tungsten metal inside that mixture — and that is what the number is built on.

A sample gets dried, tested, and assayed (a lab-style analysis of exactly what is in it). Dry sludge from clean carbide grinding, with minimal contamination, carries the most contained tungsten and the strongest number. Wet, oily sludge full of steel chips, rags, and trash carries less — sometimes dramatically less. Two drums that weigh the same can be worth very different money. This week’s sludge ranges are on Scrap Carbide Prices.

REAL MONEY IN THE DRUM

Your sludge is worth real money — here is why.

A drum of clean, dry grinding sludge holds serious contained tungsten — the same metal that makes inserts and end mills valuable, just in fine form. Shops that grind carbide every day fill drums steadily, which means sludge is not a one-time sale: it is a recurring revenue stream sitting next to your grinders.

Right now, most shops pay a waste hauler to take drums they could be selling. Flip that. Text a photo of your drums to 312-880-8174 and I will build you a custom quote — I pay top money for clean, dry sludge, and high-volume grinding operations can set up recurring drum pickup on a schedule. Your waste stream becomes a check.

MAXIMIZE YOUR NUMBER

How to get the most for your sludge.

Keep it dry

Water and coolant add weight but zero tungsten. Let sludge settle and drain, and keep drums covered and out of the rain. Dry beats wet every single time.

Store drums under cover

Rain is the enemy. A drum left open outside gains water weight and loses tungsten concentration — the worst of both worlds. Keep sludge drums lidded, under a roof or tarp, and up on pallets. Dry storage is the single cheapest way to protect your number.

Keep trash out

Rags, steel chips, grinding wheels, cigarette butts — every contaminant dilutes the assay. A dedicated sludge drum with a lid, emptied on a routine, beats an open catch-all every time.

Separate carbide grinding from steel grinding

Shops that grind both carbide and tool steel should keep the streams apart. Steel swarf mixed into carbide sludge drags the contained tungsten down fast.

Drums beat piles

Sludge in sealed 55-gallon drums is shippable, stackable, and testable. Loose piles on the floor lose moisture unevenly and pick up floor contamination. Drum it.

Let it settle before you call

Fresh sludge is wet with coolant. Give it a day or two in the drum to settle and drain off the free liquid before you text photos — the assay reads the solids, and a settled drum tests truer. If your shop runs a settling tank on grinding coolant, even better: those recovered solids are your most concentrated stream.

Know roughly what you have

When you text 312-880-8174, tell me: how many drums, roughly how full, wet or dry, and whether it is all carbide grinding or mixed. A photo of the drum and a scoop of the material is enough for me to start the conversation.

Set up a drum routine with me

Grinding operations that fill drums on a schedule should not wait until the corner is full. I work with shops on recurring drum pickup — full drums out, empties back in, on a rhythm that fits your output. Text 312-880-8174, tell me how fast you fill a drum, and we will build the routine around it.

WHO SELLS SLUDGE

Shops sitting on sludge right now.

This page is written for the shops that make sludge for a living: tool and cutter grinding shops, saw sharpening services, carbide production grinding, and any shop running surface or cylindrical grinders on carbide all day. You generate the most concentrated sludge streams in the business — and most of you are paying a hauler to take them.

One drum a year is worth a text. One drum a month is worth a routine. I pay top money for carbide sludge on a custom quote built from your photos and an assay — never a guess, never a flat number that ignores your tungsten content. Text your drums to 312-880-8174 and I will tell you exactly what the next step is.

I also buy carbide inserts, end mills, and brazed tooling from the same shops. Full process at Sell Carbide Scrap. Northwest Indiana sellers in Gary, Hammond, and Whiting are on my scheduled trips — see all service areas.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Grinding sludge questions, answered.

What is carbide grinding sludge worth?

Real money — priced on contained tungsten, the actual tungsten metal inside the drum. I pay top money for clean, dry sludge on a custom quote built from your photos and a sample test: text photos to 312-880-8174 to start. This week’s sludge ranges are on my scrap carbide prices page.

How is sludge tested?

A sample is dried and assayed to determine tungsten content and contamination. The test sets the grade, and the grade sets the number. Clean, dry sludge from carbide-only grinding tests best.

Do you buy wet sludge?

Yes, but dry pays better — water adds weight without tungsten. If your sludge is wet, drain and settle it before we talk numbers.

What about dry grinding dust and powders?

Also bought. Bagged dust, filter cake, and dry powders from dust collection all price on contained tungsten the same way.

Is there a minimum quantity for sludge?

One drum is enough to start the conversation. High-volume shops can set up recurring drum pickup on a schedule.

How do drums ship?

Sealed 55-gallon drums ship by freight — I coordinate it. A single drum can also go as a scheduled pickup depending on your location.

FINAL STEP

Stop paying to haul it away.

Text photos to 312-880-8174: the drums, how full each one is, and whether the material is wet or dry. I will tell you whether a sample test is needed, quote you on contained tungsten, and coordinate freight for the drums — or a scheduled pickup if you are in the region. One drum is enough to start the conversation.
