Tungsten Carbide Buyers: What to Look For Before You Sell

If you are comparing tungsten carbide buyers, here is the checklist that matters: honest grading you can watch, firm numbers before anything ships, and payment that does not drag. I am Sonny Johns of Ironcrest Industrial Surplus, and I buy carbide nationwide — text a photo to 312-880-8174 and judge me against this list.

UPDATED OCTOBER 2026

PUT ME TO THE TEST

My number, next to anyone’s quote.

Comparing buyers? Start with the number. The buyer boards pay $8–$15/lb for tungsten carbide. I pay $18–$20/lb — firm — for clean, sorted tungsten carbide inserts, end mills, and drills. Text your photos to 312-880-8174, get my firm number, then get anyone else’s. I will win the comparison or tell you straight.

THE CHECKLIST

Five things every good tungsten carbide buyer does.

1. They test in the open with real equipment

Carbide value lives in the grade, and the grade lives in the chemistry. A serious buyer owns an XRF analyzer — a handheld scanner that reads metal composition in seconds — and runs it where you can watch. Ask any buyer what they test with. If the answer is vague, keep looking.

2. They quote firm before you ship

You should never mail a drum across the country to find out what it is worth. A photo of the pile, any grade markings, and a rough weight should be enough for a firm number. I give today’s number from photos at 312-880-8174, and it holds.

3. They sort instead of blending

Inserts, solid tooling, brazed tips, and sludge are different products with different values. Buyers who pay one flat number for "carbide" are paying you the cheapest grade’s price for everything. Each form deserves its own number.

4. They pay on the spot with you watching

Pickup and drop-off deals should pay when the material changes hands, with you watching the scale and agreeing on the grade first. Mail-in lots get graded and weighed on arrival, then paid out. Slow pay and mystery deductions are a choice — choose otherwise.

5. They are a person you can reach

Carbide is a relationship business. Shops sell drums on a schedule for years to buyers they trust. When you text 312-880-8174, I answer — Sonny, the owner. No forms, no call centers, no broker in the middle.

DOMESTIC SUPPLY CHAIN

Why domestic buyers matter right now.

Since August 2026, U.S. tungsten scrap sellers must allocate their material to domestic buyers through August 2027 under the federal export rule. That makes your choice of buyer simpler and more important: your carbide needs an American home, and domestic competition for it supports what it is worth.

My supply chain was already 100% domestic before the rule existed. Every pound I buy stays in the United States and feeds American manufacturing. Read the full breakdown at Tungsten Export Rule and Carbide Prices.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

Tungsten carbide buyer questions, answered.

How do I choose between tungsten carbide buyers?

Use the checklist above: open XRF testing, firm photo quotes, per-form grading, fast payment with you watching the scale, and a real person on the other end. Any buyer who fails one of those is telling you something.

Do tungsten carbide buyers pay different prices for different forms?

The honest ones do. My standing offer is $18–$20/lb — firm — for clean, sorted tungsten carbide inserts, end mills, and drills, while the buyer boards pay $8–$15/lb. Brazed tooling grades lower because of its steel content, and sludge prices on contained tungsten — both get a custom number from photos. One flat number for everything means you are being paid the cheapest grade’s price.

Can I sell tungsten carbide from outside the Chicago area?

Yes. I buy nationwide — small lots mail in with a prepaid label, and I travel for the right load. Chicago gets same-day pickup and the Midwest gets scheduled runs, including Gary and Hammond.

How fast will a buyer quote my material?

From me: same day, usually within the hour. Text clear photos with a rough weight to 312-880-8174 and I will grade what I can see and give you today’s firm number.

Do buyers require a minimum quantity?

I do not. A single bucket from a home shop and drums on a schedule from a production shop both get the same straight grading.

What paperwork do I need to sell carbide?

A valid photo ID — Illinois law requires it for every scrap purchase, and any legitimate buyer will ask. Beyond that: photos, a rough weight, and your location are enough to start.
